How to Change a Brake Light

Wrench and Radiator

You may not think about your brake lights very often, but you should! Although we’re always happy to inspect or replace your brake lights at our service center, knowing how to change a brake light at home can help to prevent an accident or a ticket as you drive through Phoenix or Tempe. And, it’s a process that only takes a moment to learn!

Steps to Replace Your Vehicle’s Brake Light

Learning how to replace a brake light is quick and easy. As long as you have your owner’s manual and a Phillips-head screwdriver on hand, you should be able to work the task into any normal afternoon. First things first: check your owner’s manual to find out what kind of brake lights your vehicle requires. If you’re in the Gilbert area, you can get what you need at our parts department. Then, you’re ready to get started:

  • Remove Tail Light Housing: Use your Phillips-head screwdrivers to remove the colored lens that normally covers your brake light. Then, remove the bad bulb.
  • Prep the New Bulb: Applying a small amount of dielectric grease to the end of the new bulb can help to prevent corrosion and rust.
  • Install the New Bulb: Just screw the new brake light into place, and replace the red lens!

What’s the Importance of Checking Your Tail Lights?

Your Land Rover brakes are there to bring you to a halt, and they’ll work just fine even if your brake lights go out. However, it’s still important to check and replace your tail lights regularly:

  • Your brake lights are there to signal to other drivers: it’s time to slow down.
  • If no one can tell when you’re braking, you have a higher chance of being rear-ended.
  • Driving with a busted tail light isn’t just dangerous; it may cost you. Tickets are frequently given out for burnt-out tail lights, and no one enjoys being pulled over.
