The 2021 Porsche Cayenne lives up to its description as a ‘five-passenger sports car,” but can it really keep up with the indomitable 2022 Range Rover? If you don’t plan on road tripping, don’t need much cargo space, and don’t plan on going off-road, you and your passengers might be satisfied with the Cayenne. If you do need a vehicle that’s ready for anything, the Range Rover deserves your full attention. Our Range Rover vs. Porsche Cayenne matchup has all the details.

Performance: Cayenne or Range Rover?

The Porsche Cayenne does offer an off-road driving mode, but the Range Rover excels in ways that no other brand can match:

  • AWD or 4WD: The Cayenne comes standard with all-wheel drive. It’s great on pavement, but Range Rover 4×4 capability is undeniably superior when the terrain is working against you.
  • Prowess on Any Terrain: The Range Rover comes standard with Terrain Response®, and it offers the automatic Terrain Response® 2 on upper-level trims. Using this feature is like having a different off-road mode for every type of terrain–and that’s a feature that the Porsche can’t match.

We don’t yet have complete specs for the expected 2022 Range Rover engine lineup, so it’s difficult to say which SUV offers more horsepower and torque for your adventures in Chandler and Tempe. With that said, the Range Rover and the Cayenne have both offered a wide range of engine options, and each can be expected to deliver more than 500 horsepower in some upper-level configurations.

We also know that the base-level Range Rover offers more power than the base-level Cayenne: 355 hp vs. 335 hp.

Interior Features: Cayenne or Range Rover?

You might expect a brand like Porsche to load their vehicles up with next-generation luxuries, but the Range Rover sets a very high standard that few models will be able to match.

Each of the following features comes standard on the Range Rover, but either requires an upgrade or is completely unavailable on the Porsche Cayenne:

  • Heated front seats
  • Sliding Panoramic roof
  • Powered Gesture Tailgate
  • Heated leather steering wheel
  • 16-way power-adjustable front seats (vs. 8-way in the Porsche)
  • Dual touchscreen interface (Touch Pro™ Duo)
  • Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • And more!

Many features will be returning in the new year, so explore our guide to the 2021 Range Rover interior if you’d like to get a better idea of what to expect.

Interior Dimensions: Cayenne or Range Rover?

The Porsche Cayenne might depart from the brand’s sports car heritage in some ways, since it’s larger and more spacious than other models in the lineup–but it’s certainly no Range Rover.

Although Porsche does not advertise the interior dimensions of their models, Phoenix and Gilbert drivers can compare the two models on cargo space:

  • Range Rover SWB Cargo Space: 34.5 to 70.9 cubic feet
  • Range Rover LWB Cargo Space: 34.5 to 77.5 cubic feet
  • Porsche Cayenne SUV Cargo Space: 27.2 to 60.3 cubic feet

That’s right: the Range Rover is offered with an extended wheelbase (designated LWB) which makes its advantage over the Porsche Cayenne even more significant. Choosing this extension will also increase your second-row legroom from 39.2 inches to 46.8 inches. We’d be surprised if the Porsche Cayenne came anywhere close.
